How to specify a custom nonwoven material
The key decisions procurement and engineering teams should prepare before requesting a sample or quotation.
A useful request for quotation does more than name a material and basis weight. It explains what the nonwoven must do, how it will be converted and which parameters are critical.
1. Start with the final application
Describe where the material sits in the final product and what it must contribute.
2. Define the material family
State whether you expect spunbond, meltblown or a composite. If you are unsure, provide the required function.
3. Give the measurable parameters
- Target basis weight in g/m² and acceptable tolerance
- Working width and slit-roll widths
- Roll diameter, core size and winding direction
- Colour and acceptable visual reference
- Surface treatment or liquid behaviour
- Required test methods
4. Explain the converting process
Tell the manufacturer whether the material will be cut, sewn, welded, laminated, printed or assembled at speed.
5. Agree how the sample will be approved
Define the sample size, laboratory method, line trial and decision owner.
